Egyptians

So I have met this one Egyptian named Kero. He's quite the character, always prone to laughing, and always says goodbye by saying 'pray for me'. Great guy, everyone loves the guy. Though since he is Egyptian he has somethings that are a little bit different to me. For one, he has one fingernail that is really long. Just the one. I have no idea why, and perhaps I'll ask him, but its a little bit odd to see. Second (and perhaps more importantly), Kero has a very different idea of personal space then I do. We were both early to a bible study that takes place in Abie's apartment. They have two couches that sit at a 90 degree angle to each other. In Canada that would entail one person sitting on the one couch and the other person on the other and you chat like that. For an Egyptian this entails sitting RIGHT next to each other, possibly with your hand on their leg. Kero was really close, reaaaalllly close. Not so comfortable with that. He was. It was just how things were done for him. I was slightly uncomfortable with it, I'll admit that, though once I got it through my head that it was a cultural thing, I felt a little bit better about things. Though still slightly uncomfortable. Though I think that if I spent more time in a culture where that was the norm, I'd be okay with it, just takes some getting used to.

Well, Matt, I think I may have a little insight for you. :) When I was in Egypt I asked why many of the men had long pinky nails and apparently it's a status symbol of wealth for the most part. If you have long pinky fingernails it means that you do not have to do housework as you are wealthy enough to have a maid. This is not true of all Egyptians, some grow it out because they like the look... kind of like in North America some people who can't afford all the pizzazz of the Hollywood lifestyle will still buy the Chanel bag or whatever the status symbol may be just because they like it, not necessarily to flaunt wealth. If that makes sense. And now you know! :)
